Shipping Beauty Devices with Lithium Batteries: UN38.3, MSDS and What Your Forwarder Needs
A buyer's guide to the documents and shipping classifications for rechargeable beauty devices.
By Lilio · 2026-11-03

Most cordless beauty devices – LED masks, cleansing brushes, eye massagers, facial sprayers – contain a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. That turns an ordinary carton into regulated dangerous goods in transport. Here is what buyers should prepare before the first shipment.
The three documents
- UN38.3 test summary. Lithium cells and batteries must pass the tests in section 38.3 of the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria (altitude, thermal, vibration, shock, external short circuit, impact/crush, overcharge, forced discharge, as applicable). Carriers and marketplaces increasingly ask for the test summary.
- MSDS / SDS. A safety data sheet for the battery describes its chemistry and handling. Marketplaces such as Amazon commonly ask for it during dangerous-goods review.
- Transport classification. Ask the supplier or forwarder for the correct classification of the shipment. Batteries installed in a device are usually shipped as UN3481 (lithium-ion batteries contained in equipment); spare batteries packed separately are UN3480.
Air vs sea
Air shipments follow the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. Battery state of charge, watt-hour rating, packaging and labelling all matter, and not every airline or express service accepts every configuration. Sea freight follows the IMDG Code and normally needs a dangerous-goods declaration from the shipper.
Practical checklist
- Get the battery watt-hour (Wh) rating and the cell maker’s UN38.3 summary for each model.
- Make sure the MSDS matches the battery actually used in production, not an older version.
- Tell your forwarder the battery is contained in equipment and send the documents before booking.
- For Amazon FBA, prepare the SDS and battery information before you create the shipment.
- Keep corded devices (for example adapter-powered IPL units or hair dryers) separate in your planning – they usually have no lithium-battery restrictions.
